Unique Lamps

Feb 16, 2009 - 11:41 AM

Great lamps are hard for me to find. So when I see them I grab them. But sometimes I resort to making some of my own. With these old iron gate remnants and easy-to-purchase newly fabricated hand-forged steel parts, lamps can add a touch of integrity to a room.

Tips for turning remnant parts into radiant lamps:

  • Find your old remnant at Demolition Salvage (47 E. 900 South, SLC, 801-539-114).

  • Order parts from Kings Metals online at kingmetals.com.

  • Take your parts to The Lamp Company (700 E. 1443 South, SLC) and turn it into a working lamp for a nominal fee.

  • Order a lamp shade that adds texture and is not too refined. I recommend a nubby linen feel.

Great idea! I always wondered who could help me make my own lamps.

She's right - The Lamp Company has a fantastic assortment of shades and the people who work there are really helpful in picking them out. If possible, take your lamp with you when you go. They will let you "try on" as many shades as you want.
