The Art of Hanging Art

Mar 31, 2009 - 11:08 AM

Hanging art requires more than a hammer and nail. It also calls for a healthy dose of know-how. To develop your art-hanging skills, consider the following:

Myth: Hang art at eye level.
Truth: Considering the fact that we are not all the same height, art should be hung in relationship to what is below it, not who is viewing it.

Wrong: Art hung at the client’s eye level who is 6-feet 2-inches tall.

Right: Art hung in relationship to the console under it.

Wrong: Art hung too high over the chair

Right: Art level correctly positioned in relationship to the furniture. Just right!

Hang Ups—Tips for Displaying Art

• Most people need to lower their art by 4-inches (there is an overall tendency in human beings to hang their art too high).

• By using the 3M sticky hangers to hang your art, you can avoid making permanent holes in the wall and be free to reposition the art at any time.

• Cut out butcher paper in the size and shape of your art pieces and tape up these samples on the wall to help determine ideal positioning before hanging the actual art.

• Consider canvas wrapped art. It is very popular because it’s lightweight (easy to hang) and affordable.
