Floral Designer’s Number 1 Rule
by Brad Mee

“Design with intent,” says floral designer Shelly Huynh, co-owner of Orchid Dynasty in SLC. It’s a must-follow rule for this well-known designer.“Every element should have a purpose and contribute to the whole. There’s no place for excess.” Her designs may be contemporary and simple, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t crammed with design principals. Forms subtly repeat (check out the ruffled blossoms), transitional colors unify (violet flows throughout this arrangement), and negative space is prized as much as the flowers and foliage that punctuate the arrangement. “Enjoy each flower for what it is, and build from there,” she says. Shown here, Huynh finesses the arrangement of individual containers she created for the winter of Utah Style & Design magazine, on newsstands now.
