From the editor-Fall 2010
Time flies – Fall 2010
What? Have we really arrived at the end of the millenium’s first decade? Who knew ten years ago when I accepted my first freelance writing gig for Utah Style & Design magazine, that a decade later I would not only have logged eight years as the magazine’s editor, but also would be compiling a story recognizing the strides Utah’s design has made during this time?
Certainly not me, but here we are.
To orient yourself time-wise, think back to when TVs hid out in Sub-Zero-sized armoires, sponge-painting ruled the walls (and the DIY airwaves) and the term ‘website’ became widely known as something different than a dark basement stairwell. Now, you’re reading this editor’s note on the newly renovated UtahStyleandDesign.com.
As the decade raced on, our edit team went all-out to keep pace reporting the ways we Utahns live and the looks we love. Naturally, times and tastes changed over the years. Remember McMansion mania? Been there, done that. Smaller (and saner) quarters? Today, we say bring it. Ostentatious, over-the-top decorating? What was. Thoughtful, personalized style? Very today. Tuscany? Yesteryear. Paris? Au courant-for the time being. Self-proclaimed decorators-history. Professional designers-here to stay (hallelujah). Piled bed pillows, trophy kitchens, matching end tables? Then, then and, you guessed it, then. Authentic elements, function-driven floor plans, earth-friendly design? Now, now and absolutely now-with no signs of retreating. The list goes on. Read all about it in our Fall 2010 issue, or click here for our digital edition. Now that you’re primed for a retrospective, make sure you also check out the issue’s Decade of Style feature. It’s a story ten years in the making.
As for the next decade, we’ll continue ushering in fresh new inspirations in our magazine and online. Check them out and let us know what you think.
