Are You Finished – Winter 2012
“Please come by for a look. My home is finally finished.” It’s an invitation I receive frequently, and one that makes me chuckle every time I hear it. Is any home really finished? No, not really. Sure, the wallpaper is up, the furniture is in place, and the family photos are propped. But just as soon as the scene is set, a new pillow, hot new paint color or just-found piece of art makes an entrance, shaking things up and returning the space into a work in progress.
Admittedly, I had the goal to “finish” my home years ago. You know, get everything just so and then sit back with a satisfied “ahhhhh.” What a pipe dream. Needless to say, it never happened, not out of my lack of trying, but because just as I fine-tuned one space, I returned to rework another. I know I’m not alone. Eventually, I realized homes aren’t really ever finished—and they’re not meant to be. The fact is, we’re constantly changing, inspired by things fresh and new. Our homes should reflect that. And with that in mind, we packed our Winter 2012 issue’s pages with ideas and inspiration. Hey, it’s a new year, why not get a new look?
To get you started, check out designer LaMar Lisman’s list of 2012′s Ins and Outs (page 18). If you think teal is tops, pay close attention. Kelly Wallman offers the whys of floor lamps (page 16), while Linda Ashton not only shares the do’s and don’ts of bedside tables, but illustrates them as well (page 34). Yikes, does your nightstand look like that? From a timeless European-style estate in Provo to two mountain-goes-modern abodes in Park City, this issue’s home features reaffirm that it’s not over-the-top treatments that make the most impact, but subtle design “moments.” Why not make them yours? These are just some of the ways we offer to help you change it up and forget about the finish line.
